What Is Fire Stopping?

Fire stopping - also called fire compartmentation - is the sealing
of penetrations, joints, and gaps in fire-rated walls, floors, and
ceilings to prevent the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases
between building compartments. Without it, the fire separation
built into the structure stops working.

In Denmark, fire stopping systems are tested to EN 1366-3 and
classified under EN 13501-2, in line with the Danish Building
Regulations (BR18) and applicable marine safety standards. Izotehas

What is fire stopping and why is it required?

Fire stopping is the sealing of penetrations, joints, and gaps in fire-rated walls, floors, and ceilings to prevent fire, smoke, and toxic gases from spreading between building compartments. In Denmark, fire stopping is required by the Danish Building Regulations (BR18) wherever fire-rated construction is penetrated. Failure to properly fire stop penetrations can invalidate the fire rating of the entire compartment wall or floor.

What fire resistance classifications do you work to?

We install fire stopping systems classified to DS/EN 13501-2, which covers fire resistance ratings for construction products. Common classifications we work to include EI 30, EI 60, EI 90, and EI 120 - depending on the building type and the fire compartmentation requirements specified by the structural engineer or fire consultant.
